How EPSRC supports research and education
EPSRC provides:
- Research grants for university scientists, engineers and technicians
- PhD studentships and doctoral training programmes
- Large collaborative research programmes between universities and industry
- Facilities and infrastructure funding for labs and equipment
- Funding for admin roles in research programmes (such as Programme Managers*)
* You don't need a PhD to get into Engineering

CoTide: Our tidal turbine research
Main goal of the CoTide project
The project aims to accelerate the development of tidal stream energy, which generates electricity using underwater turbines placed in strong tidal currents.
The key challenge is that tidal energy systems are currently expensive and technically difficult to deploy in harsh marine environments. CoTide aims to solve this by creating better design methods, models, and engineering tools
What the project is working on
Researchers are studying many aspects of tidal turbine systems together rather than separately. These include:
Work Stream 1: Device Hydrodynamics – how water flow interacts with turbine blades
Work Stream 2: Composites & Rotor Materials – preventing failures from waves and loads
Work Stream 3: Structures & Reliability – ensuring turbines survive in seawater
Work Stream 4: Metocean, Resource & Ecology – understanding effects on marine ecosystems
Work Stream 5: Co-design & Optimisation – improving power output
The project combines these into integrated models and design tools that help engineers optimise the whole tidal energy system
